ICSD promotes teacher collaboration to benefit students by Cathy Wentz (The Spectrum). A school district in Utah is expanding an initiative that uses late start times for classes to give teachers more time to work in professional learning communities. Educators say the extra time has helped improve students' grade-point averages and performance on the ACT.

"For many teachers who've tried it, cooperative learning is a noisy mess rather than a stairway to heaven," writes director of the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University Robert Slavin. In the October issue of Educational Leadership, Slavin reflects on what makes cooperative learning work and shares five strategies teachers can use to get the greatest benefit possible from cooperative learning.
