Key Learning Area

Science

Science provides a distinctive view and way of thinking about the world. The study of science has led to a developing body of knowledge organised as an interrelated set of models, theories, laws, systems, structures and interactions. It is through this body of knowledge that science provides explanations for a variety of phenomena and enables sense to be made of the biological, physical and technological world. An understanding of science and its social and cultural contexts provides a basis for future choices and ethical decisions about local and global applications and implications of science.

I was like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

Isaac Newton

ARTICLES

Reading, writing and high-energy physics (a look at some of the most innovative science-education programmes from kindergarten to university) by Monya Baker (Nature). Some countries are engaging students -- from kindergarten to university -- in science lessons in innovative ways. This article highlights several programmes, including one in Germany in which young students focus on inquiry about natural elements and everyday objects.

Shifting Science Teaching by Dian Schaffhauser (The Journal). The Science Writing Heuristic approach -- developed in 1999 by Brian Hand, a science education professor at the University of Iowa -- has been used in more than 700 schools. The method, which focuses on inquiry instead of memorization, may help educators teach science under the Next Generation Science Standards, according to this article.
